This training focuses on how drugs and alcohol can impact the lives of youth and young adults, the spectrum of substance use, and how it can progress over time into a substance use disorder. We will review the neurobiology of addiction in the context of adolescent brain development, key risk factors, and the intersection between addiction, trauma, and mental health during these vulnerable years. We will also highlight best practices for screening, engagement, and referral to treatment, including what's available for substance use treatment for youth and young adults and key resources for community and family recovery supports.
