Training Description:

This training introduces participants to the foundational principles and spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a collaborative, person-centered approach to supporting youth. Participants will explore how MI can strengthen engagement, build trust, and enhance motivation for change among young people navigating complex systems and life experiences.

We will review the four core processes of MI—engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning—and practice skills such as reflective listening, affirmations, and identifying change talk. Emphasis will be placed on shifting from “power over” to “power with” approaches in everyday interactions, supporting autonomy, and fostering genuine partnership with youth.

Participants will leave with practical tools for integrating MI into trauma-informed, youth-serving settings such as residential programs, recovery high schools, and community-based services.

Objectives: Participants will be able to...

  • Describe the four processes of MI.
  • Demonstrate reflective listening and affirmation skills.
  • Recognize and respond to change talk.
  • Identify how MI supports trauma-informed practice.
  • Develop strategies to apply MI principles in daily interactions with youth.
