It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Katharine Thomas, former Executive Director of the Institute for Health & Recovery.
Katharine led IHR from March 2022 to December 2024, building on 25 years of dedicated collaboration with IHR founder, Norma Finkelstein, Ph.D. Her career reflected her dedication to equity and social justice, and her deep commitment to supporting families, particularly those impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, and trauma.
Under Katharine’s leadership, IHR deepened its focus on advancing equity within its workforce and programs. She championed initiatives to expand opportunities for people with lived experience and diverse perspectives. Katharine prioritized staff well-being and professional growth and led with humility and compassion.
Among her many achievements, Katharine developed and led programs like The Childcare Project, which trained Spanish-speaking childcare providers, and The Kinship Project, which strengthened parent–child relationships in families affected by substance use disorders. She also contributed to statewide policy initiatives, including the Governor’s Opioid Task Force and the Statewide Commission on Children, Youth, and Families.
Katharine’s vision, compassion, and commitment to justice left an enduring legacy, touching countless lives and shaping policies that continue to inspire. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.
