It is a common myth that secondhand smoke/vaping aerosol exposure is not as harmful as firsthand use. There are even more misconceptions about the dangers of thirdhand smoke/vaping aerosol. Research has found that secondhand and thirdhand smoke/vaping aerosol exposure harms individuals and populations who already experience significant health inequities based on sociodemographic factors. Many of these individuals are disproportionately impacted by second and thirdhand exposure even if they do no use tobacco or live with someone who does. In this training, we will discuss the social disparities in exposure to secondhand and thirdhand smoke/vaping aerosol and evidence-based harm reduction strategies to reduce exposure.
